Great Online Services/Applications For Web Savvy People

The following list highlights a couple of online services/applications that I have either tried, would tried, or will try (once released). Please let me know if I missed one.

The descriptions were mostly cut and pasted from the products website.

The notorious (well known services):

  • Linked in – With LinkedIn, you find the people, jobs and services you need through the people you know and trust, while you strengthen and extend your existing network.
  • Flickr – The best online photo management and sharing application in the world.
  • Backpack – Organize to do lists, notes, images, and photos Plan a personal or business trip Keep track of what your competitors are doing Plan a home improvement project Collaborate on a new business idea Keep track of houses you’re considering buying Gather information for a research project Keep a list of gift ideas for friends Build a For Sale page, Organize and plan a wedding or event, and more…
  • Basecamp – From small and big businesses managing their client and internal projects, to professors managing their classrooms, to individuals managing their home improvement projects (and weddings).
  • Blink Sale – Blinksale is perfect for anyone who needs to invoice customers and clients for services or products sold. As a design company, we created Blinksale with professional service industries in mind. Additionally, with time-billing invoices and product invoices, Blinksale is an excellent choice for attorneys, accountants, IT professionals, software developers, journalists, contractors, engineers, architects, videographers, and more. Basically, if you need to send invoices, Blinksale can work for you.
  • Jewel Boxing – Create Professional-Grade DVD and CD Packages with the Jewelboxing System.
  • Campaign Monitor – Campaign Monitor is an email newsletter and list management tool built for web designers who can design great looking emails, but need software to send their campaign, track the results and manage their subscribers.
  • Odeo – Odeo consists of three major parts: A catalog of audio content, of all types, which is constantly being added to. The Odeo Syncr, which let’s you download anything in the catalog (and, optionally, put it on your MP3 player). And creation tools, including the Odeo Studio, which let you publish your own audio content, which will then show up in the catalog. (The creation tools aren’t ready for public use yet, though.)
  • Mail Chimp – MailChimp is a powerful tool for design-it-yourselfers that makes sending email newsletters fun, easy, and affordable.
  • Plazo Online – Plaxo Online gives you a secure online account with your contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes – and you can access them anywhere! How often have you left home and forgotten to bring a friend’s phone number or the details of your appointment? Stay connected to the important information you need and keep it up-to-date using Plaxo Online. It’s FREE!

The up and coming (not so well known services):

  • Side Job Track – Web-based job tracking, invoicing, reporting & project management software for the part-time independent contractor.
  • Goovite – Fast, free, easy invites, with no registration required.
  • Protopage – Use Protopage for quick access to web sites, and to keep sticky notes and reminders.
  • QOOP – flickr users can now print their images into Photobooks or posters through QOOP’s integrated printLinQ system.
  • Dropload – Dropload is a place for you to drop your files off and have them picked up by someone else at a later time. Recipients you specify are sent an email with instructions on how to download the file. Files are removed from the system after 7 days, regardless if they have been picked up or not. You can upload any type of file, mp3, movies, docs, pdfs, up to 100MB each! Recipients can be anyone with an email address
  • Copy Talk – You just left one meeting and are late for the next one. No problem! Use your cell phone to dictate memos, record meeting notes, listen to important email, and dictate emails!
  • File Browser – The filebrowser is a lightweight PHP application that allows you to thumbnail images and view them in a web browser. That’s it. Short and sweet.
  • Xdrive – Xdrive is your personal hard drive on the Internet. Whether you are managing files for yourself or your business, Xdrive enables you to store, access, share, and backup your files anytime, anywhere.
  • Strong Space – Strongspace is a secure place to gather, store, back-up and share any type of file with your co-workers, friends and family. You can upload, download and manage your files over SFTP (Secure FTP) or with any modern web browser.
  • Writely – Writely allows you to edit documents online with whomever you choose, and then publish them online—also for whomever you choose.
  • Photo Stamps – PhotoStamps are an exciting new product that lets you take your own images or photographs and turn them into real U.S. postage! To create PhotoStamps all you need to do is upload a photo, customize it using our fun, easy-to-use interface, and place your order.

Yet to Arrive (not released, but interesting):

  • Chalk – Designers, programmers, writers, family, friends – anyone. We all want tools that make us more productive, especially when we’re working in groups. Chalk gives any team an immediate, real time collaborative environment thats accessible from any computer in the world. Do you want to share your ideas, code or graphics instantaneously with others? Chalk is already changing the way we work, and we’re sure it will for you.

    @Cody: Yes, there are three of us. I’m redesigning PlainSimple to introduce everyone. We are changing the direction of PlainSimple to be more product-focused. It’s exciting!
